Every piece of #African Mud Clothis unique in colour & print because every piece is handmade in an incredibly in-depth process over two to three weeks which is why these beautiful textiles appeals to me. The cloth originates from Mali and is known locally as ‘#Bogolanfini”. Each piece has a story to tell through symbols & patterns rich in history which have been handed down through generations. Traditionally the men weave the cotton cloth in strips and the women dye it using foliage of varying colours. Fabric is caked in river mud and dried in the sun and this process is repeated many times and then painted with bleach to achieve the final design.
There are a variety of cloths to discover; #Kuba Cloth from The Congo which is handwoven using strands of Raffia Palm leaves dyed in with vegetable dyes creating earthy tones. These sometimes have applique, embroidery, patchwork & embellishments.
#Korthoga Clothsare more picturesque with graphic images. #Kikoy Wrapsare from Swahili coast of East Africa and worn by men as wraps. #Manjak Clothis from Senegal and also made in strips sewn together.
My personal favourites are Vintage #Mossi Indigo Clothswhich are worn by women of the Mossi tribe of Burkina Faso. Original pieces usually have some fade & wear but have a wonderfully soft texture. #Indigo Damask Clothsare from Guinea, they have been handstitched to create a resist pattern and dyed in indigo. Other types of Indigo Cloths are from Mali which are made in strips & then sewn together.
