Tales from The Watermill Part 3

Updated: Mar 6, 2020

The Green Reception room has finally evolved, though of course I am constantly on the look-out for new ideas & finishing touches. This room is in an original part of the house and has a very different feel with its high ceiling and big sash window looking onto the mill pond at the front of the house with its dramatic weeping willows. The backdrop was the colour & foliage inspiration for the room. When we arrived at the Watermill, this room was painted a deep red with dark red ceiling a mahogany stained floor, it was very dark with heavy mediaeval embroidered curtains. It is now transformed to a beautiful fresh light space, the floor has been sanded and painted white the walls are the same Portland Stone colour as the rest of the house but the green accents are brought out in soft furnishings, decorative objects & plants.

The printed leaf foliage linen was found in Provence and we just couldn’t resist covering our oversized armchair to match the curtains and even had a large footstool made. This is such a cosy room with the wood-burner. The #MatthewHilton Retro sofa was an ebay purchase but ties nicely into the scheme with green cushions & throw.

The #WillyRizzo style coffee table was purchased in France and works well with the vintage curved gold Foglio wall lights. The green desk lamp is a 1950’s #FerdinandSoleres mid-century classic. I love these lamps and have managed to collect a few variations.

The two original wall bays are homage to things found on travels and life in Morocco. Of course, I must talk about carpets which are one of my passions. I have several vintage carpets that work well in this room; the Marmoucha which has a soft hint of pistachio and taupe coloured Berber symbols, two Beni Ourains, one an emerald green graduated carpet with black diamonds and another which is more of a bottle green. #weaverandfound have a very large Beni ourain (2 x 4m) with muted grey diamonds, this one fills the room leaving the white painted floor as a border.
